Antique Chinese Tea Set for two Rose Medallion Late Qing Dynasty 1890s
Item Details
Description
Antique Chinese set of eight [8] pieces - porcelain tea set for two: 2 cups, 2 saucers, 2 plates, 1 bowl, 1 tea caddy. Chinese Canton Export porcelain rose medallion tea set, late Qing Dynasty - early Republic, 1890s-1910s. Two items have a matching 1890s-1910s 'China' stamp of this period, all other items are unmarked. Each item is hand painted- there are no black contour lines. The imperfect dull gold on red plating matches the antique plating method.

The plates have fine bottom rim with a little sand melted into glaze, the cups are fine translucent eggshell porcelain. The set consists of 2 larger plates, 2 saucers, 2 demi-tasse cups, small bowl, and small tea caddy.

The 2 plates are 8.1/8" [20.6cm] across, one plate has a tiny chip at the edge; the saucers are 4.1/2" [11.5cm] across, one saucer has a tiny chip at the edge; the cups are 2.1/4" [5.8cm] tall and 2" [5.1cm] across at the top; the small bowl is 5.3/4" [14.6cm] across and c.1" [2.6cm] deep; the tea caddy is 2.3/4" [7cm] tall including lid, hexagonal, c. 2.1/8" x 2.1/8" 5.3cm]; it has a few glaze imperfections, overall very good condition. See photos.

Rose Medallion is the pattern with the widest variations in forms, pattern, and quality. Four alternating panels around a central gold circle ("medallion") enclosing a bird and a tree peony characterize it. Within the four panels are birds, flowers, butterflies, and people in a house. Separating the panels are scrollwork vines, and flying "Fu" bats, a symbol for good luck and happiness.

The oldest pieces of antique Rose Medallion china date back to around 1840. They will not have any words or Chinese characters on the bottom. Early porcelain also has more pitting, may have a gold rim, may have scratches from use and the artwork in general is better and more detailed.
