Description
Featured in this lot is this collection of seven Ralph R. Doubleday (July 4, 1881 – June 30, 1958) large colortone postcards circa 1930s. Following the photograph of what is thought to be the first action shot of a man in midair, off a bronc during Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1910, Ralph R. Doubleday rose to fame as a rodeo photographer. For more than 40 years, Doubleday traversed the nation filming rodeos and creating photo postcards that captured the heyday of rodeos. In Dickinson, he had a photography studio from 1914 to 1920. It changed its name to Presthus before becoming Horstman Studio. The postcards all show colored pictures of rodeo photos and feature a title on each. The first is titled, "Wild Brahma Bull Riding" and shows a cowboy who has just fallen off his bull as he lays underneath it while the bull is kicking its hind legs. The second is titled, "Crazy Snake Up To One Of His Tricks" and shows a cowboy on a bucking bronco almost standing on his saddle as the horse kicks out its hind legs. The third and fourth are titled, "Brahma Bull Tickling George Mills" and shows a rodeo clown running from a bull, narrowly escaping his horns. The fifth is titled, "Louis Brooks Leaving Colborns Pet" and shows a cowboy going head first into the ground after he was bucked off his horse. The sixth in this collection is titled, "Bill Linderman, 1945 All Around Champion" and shows Bill Linderman riding a bucking bronco and it rears its hind legs. He is holding on with one hand and has a huge smile on his face. The last is titled, "Nesbitt & Elliott's Famous Bucking Bronc Five Minutes To Midnight" and shows a cowboy almost completely off the back of the horse as he stretches for the saddle as a last ditch effort to stay on. Each post card, in the bottom right hand corner, reads, "©R.R. Doubleday". The back of the postcards read, "Distributed by R.R. Doubleday, Council Bluffs, Iowa" and "Genuine Curteich, Chicago C.T. Art Colortone Giant Postcard (Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.)". Each post card shows very good condition with no signs of obvious damage or wear to the postcards. Each post card is set in a plastic slip case to ensure lasting quality. The postcards measure 6 7/8" L x 10 7/8" W.
