Item Details
Description
For your consideration is this engraving of Nick Kessler done by E.G. Williams & Brothers in New York circa 1900-1915. From the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th, E. G. Williams & Bro., a renowned printing firm with headquarters in New York City, was in operation. Edmund Goldsmid Williams and his brother George, who had immigrated to America from England in the 1840s, founded the business. The Williams brothers established their company in 1851 on Nassau Street in Lower Manhattan as a small printing shop. The Williams brothers quickly made a name for themselves as knowledgeable and creative printers in the city's printing industry, which at the time was centered on Nassau Street. E. G. Williams & Bro. had a reputation for producing high-quality work by the 1860s and had grown to be one of the biggest and most prosperous printing companies in the city. E. G. Williams & Bro. also printed a wide variety of other printed materials, such as books, maps, and advertisement posters, in addition to financial printing. The New York Stock Exchange, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art were just a few of the notable organizations that the company served as clients. E. G. Williams & Bro. has a reputation for pioneering printing technology throughout its existence. The business invented new methods for engraving and embossing, and it was leading the way in the use of lithography, which enabled high-quality color printing. Up until the early 20th century, E. G. Williams & Bro. was still operating before being eventually absorbed by other printing companies. This engraving is set on a large piece of cardstock paper and shows a front facing portrait of Joaquin Miller, an American poet, author and frontiersman born in 1837 and died in 1913. Below the portrait it reads, "Joaquin Miller's History". Below that it is signed by Nick Kessler in black ink. The bottom of the engraving reads, "Eng. by E.G. Williams & Bro. N.Y.". The engraving shows good condition overall with slight dirt marks but no signs of obvious damage. The engraving measures 9 1/4" L x 6 7/16" W, while the entire piece measures 16" L x 12" W.
