Description
Featured in this lot is this 1930-40s Sohio Petroleum Company porcelain enamel advertising sign from Park County, Wyoming. From 1870 to 1987, the Sohio Petroleum Company, also known as Standard Oil Company (Ohio), was a significant American oil company. It was one of the original 34 companies that made up the Standard Oil Trust, which was established by John D. Rockefeller in 1882, and it had a significant impact on the development of the oil industry. The Standard Oil Company of Ohio was founded by John D. Rockefeller and his associates in 1870, which is where Sohio got its start. The creation of a vertically integrated oil company with complete control over production, refining, transportation, and marketing was Rockefeller's vision. One of the biggest oil companies in the world, Standard Oil expanded rapidly. The Sherman Antitrust Act had been broken, according to a 1911 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which mandated that Standard Oil be divided into several smaller companies. As a result, Standard Oil of Ohio became a stand-alone business and later adopted the name Sohio. The remaining Sohio shares were fully acquired by BP in 1987, and the business was formally incorporated into BP's operations. The Sohio brand was dropped, but the business survived under the BP moniker. The sign shows a metal and porcelain construction with a red, white and black color scheme. The sign reads at the top in white lettering, "Sohio Petroleum Co.". In the middle of the sign it shows to the left, it shows the Sohio logo with two red triangles above and below the lettering, encased in a dark blue oval. To the right of the logo it reads, "Gov't - Sedgwick No 1 NM NE 34 - 57N - 98W Park Co., Wyoming WYO. 051505" in dark blue lettering. The top and bottom of the sign are lined with red. The sign shows four mounting holes, one in each corner for easy hanging. The sign shows good overall condition with some rusting and missing enamel in the top left corner. There are some scratches and scuffs throughout but is still in good readable and display condition. The sign measures 12" L x 24" W.
