Item Details
Description
For your consideration in this lot is a classic lithograph of Charlie Russell's "Planning The Attack" that was painted in 1901, and has "C M Russell" and his trademark Bison skull in the lower left corner. This full-color art was reproduced by Brown & Bigelow, copyright hallmark B&B in the lower right corner, from the original masterpiece by Charles M. Russell. Print by Dick Jones Picture Company, Huntington Park, California (Jones was a friend of Russell in the early 1900's). The Dick Jones Picture Company was founded by Dick Jones and his wife Peggy in 1931, when they settled in Huntington Park, California after relocating from Great Falls, Montana. In Great Falls, Dick had worked for the Como Company, which framed all of Charles M. Russell's paintings. He and Russell became friends from their work together at Como. The Dick Jones Picture Company became the leading publisher of prints of Russell's paintings. Charles Marion Russell (1864–1926), also known as C. M. Russell, Charlie Russell, and "Kid" Russell, was an American artist of the American Old West. He created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Native Americans, and landscapes set in the western United States and in Alberta, Canada, in addition to bronze sculptures. Charlie Russell was the "other" artist, besides Frederic Remington, who chronicled life in the Wild West. Unlike Remington, Russell settled permanently in the west (Montana) and wholeheartedly embraced everything life there had to offer. He was a "real" cowboy, lived with a mountain man and was an adopted brother of the Blackfoot tribe. His oils, watercolors and bronzes reflect an intimate knowledge of his subjects, and no one was more surprised than he when they began fetching high prices. The glass and metal framed lithograph is in good overall preserved condition, the metal frame is mid-century basic faux wood finish with scratches along the edges. No other obvious marring noted. Visible art measures 9.75"W x 13"L, frame is 11"W x 14"L x .50"D
