Item Details
Description
This lot includes a Don V. Crowley print, "Security Blanket." Don V. (Donald) Crowley (1926 - 2019) was known for his Historical-Indian genre and animal paintings, and illustrations. Crowley was heavily influenced towards subjects and technique by Frederic Remington's book titled, Done in the Open. He went to Tucson in 1973, with the idea of painting exclusively for galleries and moved there permanently the next year. His models were often members of the San Carlos Indian Reservation in eastern Arizona and eventually, almost exclusively, a family of Paiutes, the Martineaus, from the Kaibab Plateau region of northern Arizona. His handsome, clear portraits of Native American women and children and their colorful Pendleton blankets are signature works. In fact, long-time collectors of his work may see the subject as both a girl and a woman, wearing the colorful, geometrically patterned blanket that is handed down from generation to generation. He is a member of the “Tucson 7,” an informal group of artists who all began their careers in commercial art and illustration and have made the successful transition to Western fine art. In 1994, he was elected a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, a group devoted to keeping realistic Western art alive in the tradition of Remington and Russell. This prestigious group holds its annual exhibition and sale each October at the Phoenix Art Museum. Crowley is represented by some of the most prestigious western art galleries in the country including Settlers West (Tucson, AZ), Trailside (Scottsdale, AZ; Jackson Hole, WY) and Alterniann (Santa Fe, NM). The eloquence of a Don Crowley painting is not in its re-creation of history, but in its vision of the living. A consummate realist, Don can paint the beauty and dignity of an Apache maiden, the spiritual countenance of an Indian dancer or a quiet still life with equal skill and passion. He has been able to free his talents and delve into the engrossing world of the Apache and Paiute Indians. His paintings typify the ideals of these southwestern societies and impart to the viewer the serenity of these people and their surrounding. Published by The Greenwich Workshop in 1979, this print is in very fine condition, no marring observed. Measures 19.5"L x 16.5"W.*
