Item Details

Description

Unusual cut paper Scherenschnitte, mounted on original red silk, and framed in a period, and probably original Empire-style frame. The Scherenschnitte is signed “Robert Robertson, his peice (sic)” and dated 1853. There is gold leaf trim (at the bottom, surrounding the date, at the base of the columns, around the signature block and trimming the urn and basket at the tops of the columns. The flute player is very detailed, and there is a dog cut into the base of the monument. The birds at the top have pin-prick backs. Ornate and very detailed. It is glued-down on the period red silk backing. Because of the crown at the top of the right column, I am assuming that this piece is English as opposed to Pennsylvania German. The Scherenschnitte measures 9” x 11” (sight) and 13” x 15” (frame size). It is in remarkably excellent condition: there are no breaks, tears or missing pieces. The silk has some scattered black spotting, virtually all of it outside the cut-paper area, but there are no visible splits or tears in the silk. I have not had it out of the frame.
