Table clock of the firm Tiffany & Co. of rococo inspiration, with the representation of a gallant scene in his base. It has a white dial with Arabic numerals and Louis XVI hands.
Since the 19th century, Tiffany & Co. has been the most prestigious jeweller in the United States, and therefore the world's leading jeweller. It was founded in 1837 in New York by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young, initially dedicated to the sale of stationery and luxury goods. The initial name of the house, Tiffany, Young and Ellis, was changed to Tiffany & Co. in 1853, when Charles Tiffany took control of the company and it shifted its focus to jewellery. Soon after, from 1862, the company would supply the Union army with cavalry sabres, flags and surgical instruments. It did not abandon the production of luxury goods, however, and in 1867 became the first American firm to win a medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle, an award it would win again at the 1878 Exposition in the same city. Tiffany & Co., now fully recognised internationally, began to be particularly admired for the quality of its diamonds, a reputation it still enjoys today.
In 1902, founder Charles Tiffany died and was succeeded by his son, the famous stained glass designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, who became Tiffany's first official design director. Decades later, other great artists would be associated with the company, including the legendary designer Jean Schlumberger, Andy Warhol and, more recently, Frank Gehry.
