Description
Antique gobelin woven tapestry wall hanging, 19th century, no identification markings. Equestrian hunters at the castle, Rococo style.
The gobelin is 5'.33" [64"/160cm] x 2'.29" [27.1/2" /69cm]; some fading and aging, the large gobelin was folded [see photos] and has to be ironed before displaying; very good condition.
A gobelin tapestry is a piece of decorative heavy woven fabric that is used to adorn walls, furniture and floors. Using a more narrow definition, the term "tapestry" often refers to handwoven textiles that are used as wall decorations.
Created at the Manufacture des Gobelins in France, the tapestry is named after a family of cloth makers and dyers who are credited with founding the dyestuffs business in 15th century Paris. The Manufacture produced carpets of exceptional beauty and quality, which secured its place as the official supplier of tapestries and woven upholstery to the 17th century court of King Louis XIV. During the 18th - 19th centuries, the gobelin manufacturing factories were founded in several European countries.
