Abstract bronze by Cyril Kumalo,titled African Marriage Dance,1981.
Height: 14.75 inches.-------------The signature is worn but it is there.You can make out Kum..lo(see the photos).------------------------------------------A bronze edition of this same work is on permanent load to the University of Fort Hare, Alice Campus(Africa).--------------------------------Temba Cyril Kumalo was born in December, 1950, Western Native Township, Johannesburg - studied 1963 to 1966 at Jubilee Social Art Centre, Eloff Street, Johannesburg, under Ezrom Legae and Bill Hart.1969 concentrated on terracotta sculptures at the Academy of Arts run by Peter Haden in Craighall, Johannesburg1975 further studies in fine arts at the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston MA USA1976/1979 art instructor at Mofolo Art Centre, Soweto (one of his well-known students was Lucas Seage) --------------Davids notes: African Marriage Dance is one of Kumalos most sucessful sculptures and it is an award winning bronze.He combines the modernism Post war sensibilites with a unique African influence.Most of the Parisian artists in the West acknowledged their influences when it comes to African art, Picasso and Braque made no secret of their love and appreciation of African works, here the direction is headed in the opposite way. You can see in Kumalos African Marriage Dance a distinct influence of Archipenko and Picasso, in the abstract tubular quality his molded forms that move together with a dynamic energy.
