Fresh to the market, directly from the family... Exceedingly rare James Conning, Mobile Alabama, Staff & Field officer's sword in its original scabbard by Haiman Brothers Columbus, Georgia.
This surfaced this year in Alabama when the family brought it to their local museum for evaluation. Referrals were made and I was brought into the loop and was able to purchase it from them. The family did not know which ancestor carried this rarity and in fact did not much care.
The most interesting feature is the original scabbard which was unquestionably made by Haiman Brothers in Columbus, Georgia. It is a rarity difficult to quantify. There might be 5 such scabbards known to survive. Whether Conning jobbed the scabbard out to Haiman as a special order, (Conning only made leather scabbards), or if the Alabama rebel officer had it made especially for him is unknown.

When I got this the steel sheath had nickel plate which had been added a hundred plus years ago by the Confederate veteran for UCV parade use. The grip leather and twisted wire grip wrap were both deteriorating. I sent this to noted restorer Jim Brown in Wisconsin and he removed the plating and dressed the grip. The original twisted wire was brittle and had to be replaced.
The original Conning batch number -38- is visible on the blade. The condition is top shelf and the CS letters in the guard make this an exceptional Confederate display piece. An iconic rebel sword that is one of the scarcest and most sought of all CW swords.
