Both letters by Peter H. Van Slyck (1833-1913) to his mother Catherine van Slyck, the first letter dated October 14th, 1861, featuring the 1860 "rail-splitter" design printed in Des Moines; the second letter dated July 2nd, 1865; also including the envelope for the second letter and a calling card for Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hammond (nee Catherine M. Van Slyck)
