Ancient Roman Angular Face, Grayware Terracotta, Period 1st-2nd century AD. Size 0 3/4 inches high. Small face fragment from a mold-made face, the features somewhat flat, with wide nose and large lips set in a relatively narrow face. Remains of gesso and some staining to the surface. “One of the reasons why I acquired this because it reminded me of Akhenaton. It clearly is not from the time period, but the angular features were reminiscent of his statuary.” (JM) Provenance: Reportedly exported from Egypt in 1918. Ex Joseph Altounian (1890-1954), France, acquired prior to 1937. Altounian was one of the most renowned antique dealers of the 20th century.
