Classic end-of-the-world cover and story by Werner Roth. The eerie molten bridge in the background, with its steel structure softened by the heat of a sun gone supernova, may have resonated with Cold War readers plagued by atomic fears. The A-bomb that destroyed Hiroshima five years earlier was detonated over Aioi Bridge, an architectural monument that was considered a perfect target due to its visibility from the sky and its central location in the doomed city.
