Description
An Italian silk ceiling chandelier lighting fixture in the Scudo Saraceno ("Saracen Shield") pattern, designed by Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) for Fortuny (Venice). Engineered to allow light to filter through the silk and penetrate the inlay of the decorative ring, creating an evocative atmosphere. Gilt embellished yellow ochre silk fabric body in a swirl pattern with exotic Orientalist design of arabesques, scrolls, flourishes, flora, and other patterns evoking the Near East and the romantic medieval Saracen motif. Delicate roped fabric hangers and decorations. No apparent signature.
