Description
Yes, I used many superlatives in the title of this lot but take one look at this inkwell and you'll understand why. I'm very fortunate enough to have an identical piece in my collection, but in 27 years of collecting, I've never seen another. Featuring thick, deep swirling panels of crosscuts and the most unusual swirling facet cutting - it truly is a singular example of this motif. The base features a large 28-point hobstar. Love how the swirling is kept up on the sterling lid. I can't stress enough - this is a not only a huge inkwell, but also the nicest cut I've ever seen. Weighs 4 pounds! Silver is marked Thomas G. Brown & Sons and that mark indicates goods made for Gorham Sterling.
Condition
Great condition - the lid sits slightly open (but barely so) and a couple of very small flakes to the sides of the miters (shown) - easy repair. 6 3/4" tall, 5" wide
