In a documented account of one of the commercial voyages taken by the "Ceres," dated February 1856, she left New York in ballast, and sailed to Genoa where she took on specie (coined money) to convey to Sumatra. She was involved in a number of gales (documented in ship's logs), lost a significant amount of copper and the pumps failed. In need of repairs she bore off for Mauritius. The repairs were completed by May, at a cost of $9,000 Mauritius dollars.
