Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A striking example of an alabastron, hand-sculpted from warm, honey-hued alabaster with natural cream-colored inclusions and light horizontal banding that complements its elegant form. The ancient vessel presents a gently flared rim atop a flanged neck, a subtle shoulder, and a piriform body that gradually tapers to a pointed base. Alabaster, which is a form of gypsum or calcite, soft to carve, and smooth, was quarried along the length of the Nile, from Giza to just south of Luxor, and the Egyptians made its carved form famous throughout the ancient world! Size: 1.6" Diameter x 5.4" H (4.1 cm x 13.7 cm); 5.8" H (14.7 cm) on included custom stand.
The Egyptians were master carvers, and used the abundant stone deposits in the Nile Valley and the Eastern Sahara throughout their history to fashion sculptures, vessels, and monumental buildings. The perfect symmetry of this example demonstrates their skill. The piece was drilled into, then special tools were used to expand the drilled-upon areas, allowing the walls of the vessel to be thin enough that light could pass through the stone. The alabastron was a very personal item, used for bathing and holding perfume. As a result, it was frequently buried with its owner.
