Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875), Frightened Hare
originally conceived circa 1865, cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne in the late 19th century, patinated cast bronze, signed BARYE with Barbedienne foundry mark to terrace edge, numbered to underside, together with oval hardstone plinth.
1 7/8 x 2 1/4 x 1 1/4 in.
Ferdinand Barbedienne purchased approximately 125 casting models from the late Antoine Louis Barye's sale in 1876, which the foundry used to produce editions within a successful catalogue.
A similar casting by Barbedienne is in the Fogg Art Museum collection, object number 1927.100.
