Item Details
Description
19th century, some possibly earlier, likely American dia. 23-1/2 to 7 in. (range); Called star anchors, they were common in the 19th century. These hefty iron architectural antiques were more than decorations, they were end pieces of wrought-iron bars that ran through building walls and were bolted to the exterior masonry walls. The iron bars literally tied the walls to the interior and prevented the walls from buckling. To keep the tie rods from being pulled through the brick walls, they were connected to star anchors, rosettes or “S” anchors on the outside.Provenance: Descent through South Salem, N.Y. family[In Situ Item] This Item will not be on display in our saleroom during our preview period.
