Stipple engraving and etching on paper entitled: :"The Landing of Christopher Columbus", made after the painting by American artist Edward Savage (1761–1817) and engraved by English-born American David Edwin, (1776–1841,) in 1800. Captioned at center, beneath image: "On the Morning of October 12th, 1492. COLUMBUS RICHLY DRESS'D with a Drawn Sword in his hand / First set his on the NEW WORLD, which He had Discovered. The Portrait of Columbus is Copied from / The Original Picture in the Collection of GRAND DUKE of TUSCANY at FLORENCE". Published by E. Savage, Philadelphia, Jan 1st 1800. Image area in very good condition. Margin with foxing, two closed tears, some edge wear, small loss at upper edge of sheet. Sheet mounted to foamcore. Approx. 32" x 22 1/2". Plate marks approx. 24 3/4" x 15".Provenance: a private Northern Virginia collection.
