DESCRIPTION: Meiji era string necklace composed of ojime ("cord fastener") beads composed of various materials including silver, jade, coral, bone, stone, cinnabar and enamel and crafted into various shapes including a skull, a fish, a rabbit, a bird, a god's head, etc. One bead contains a compass in a wooden casing. When unfastened and measured from one end bead to the other, piece measures 29.75". When stretched out and measured from middle bead(s) to end beads, piece measures 15.5".
