Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Chilkat River Region, Klukwan, Tlingit, ca. early 20th century CE. This is an impressive deer hide collar or "bib" adorned with glass beads and horsehair tassels attached to tin cone danglers. The old trade beads are made from yellow millefiori glass and spherical red glass- beads were valuable goods that many tribes incorporated into their ceremonial outfits as signs of prestige. The front is painted with formline motifs that represent clan animals or other affiliations. The Klukwaan village was thought to have been settled by men from the Gaanaxteidi Clan (Raven) and women from the Kaagwaantaan Clan (Eagle). The piece is mounted in a protective display case. Size of collar: 17" L x 15" W (43.2 cm x 38.1 cm); case: 29.75" L x 23.5" W (75.6 cm x 59.7 cm)

Condition
Wear from age and use. Fading and discoloration to the painted hide, with darkening to hide and pigments. Red patina and oxidation on tin dangler cones. Some fraying to peripheries, but otherwise intact and very good. Old inventory number on surface. Mounted in a modern display case.
