Group of (4) 19th century American wallpaper bandboxes, 1830s, to include: ''Clayton's Ascent'' box depicting hot air balloons over a town, commemorating Englishman Richard Clayton's 350 mile journey from the Cincinnati Amphitheatre to Munroe County, VA in a hot air balloon in April of 1835, (repairs to threading on lid); box depicting bird-drawn Roman chariots, with top depicting dromedary and driver, inside of lid inscribed ''Hopa Young'' and with Henry Cushing & Co. maker's label; box depicting squirrels, with top depicting robed figures, inscribed ''A.S. Nichols...''; and box depicting stag hunt, with top marked ''Port of Buffalo from Lake Erie'', inside of lid with illegible inscription, (heavy wear to wallpaper on top, reinforced lid). Some lids possibly added later. Wear, minor splits and losses to wallpaper, minor dirt and grime. Larger 13''h, 20''w, 16''d. Provenance: Estate of Joseph ''Jay'' St. Mark, PhD, of Newtown, Connecticut, historian, appraiser, and collector of fine Americana. Literature: Bandboxes with identical wallpaper designs can be found in ''Hat Boxes and Bandboxes at Shelburne Museum'', by Lilian Baker Carlisle, 1960, The Shelburne Museum, pages 29, 33, 43, 48, 135, and 136.
