ARTIST BIO:

Raised in the Texas hill country, Kim Coulter was encouraged at an early age to pursue her interest in drawing and painting. She began her formal art training at the University of Texas in 1980. In 1986 she received a B.A. in Art Therapy from the College of New Jersey and from 1988 to 1990 she continued with post-graduate work at the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach. While living in Southern California she became inspired by the early California impressionists. After moving back to the Southwest she was drawn to and studied the work of past and contemporary masters of impressionism and plein air painting.

"I paint en plein air as often as I can. Most of these paintings are small and painted in two hours or less in order to capture the fleeting light and ever changing conditions on location. The abstract landscapes are larger works and are inspired by what I see and experience in the studies I do outdoors. These works are done in the studio on gessoed panel or linen on panel and have a more contemporary feeling to them. Giving the impression of something familiar along with a 'soft' abstract interpretation has proven to be an enjoyable process for me as an artist."

Coulter's work is in private and corporate collections including Glenbrook Hospital in Chicago, Illinois; the Hilton Hotel in Austin, Texas; and the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Her paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the South and Southwest. Her limited edition prints can be found in galleries and home furnishing stores across the country including Crate and Barrel, Ethan Allen and Z Gallery.
