Description
King George II of Great Britain [1727-1760], half-length, turned to the right and looking to viewer, wearing periwig, royal insignia and royal cloak over his shoulders; in oval frame decorated with bay leaves, British coat of arms, inscription "Georgius II. Rex Magna Britanniae", undated, c.1730s, probably German engraver. Original antique c.1730s copper engraving. Certification of Authenticity will be included upon buyers request.
Cut to design, c.3. 3/4" x 5. 1/2" [96mm x 140mm], paste on larger laid paper, 6" x 7.1/2" [150mm x 190mm], A.L. handwritten number "64" at the upper right corner. The biography of George II is hand-written in the 18th century's German on the back of the plate [see photo]. A little aging, very good condition.
The British Museum and National Portrait Gallery, London have several similar engraved portraits of George II, this particular portrait is not present in their collections.
George II was King of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Lueneburg and a prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire from 11 June 1727 until his death in 1760. George was the last British monarch born outside Great Britain: he was born and brought up in northern Germany.
Provenance:
This plate comes from a collection of engravings bound by the German art collector "A.L." The finalized collection of hand-numbered engravings is dated 1762 which provides additional warranty that the engravings are authentic and created prior to 1762; auctioned in London, UK.
