Item Details
Description
Etching, 9 3/8” x 12 1/2”, pencil signed and printed by the artist, edition of 50 (Wuerth 606). A terrific scene of the tracks surrounding the industrial buildings of Oberhausen, Germany; the trains and surrounding factories provide the structure of the composition, while ghostly, quickly rendered figures give a human presence and sense of scale to the bustling railyard. Pennell was an important American etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Good friends with James McNeill Whistler, he and his wife co-authored his biography. Pennell was known for his continued experimentation with technique and style, producing cityscapes, landscapes and marine scenes.
