Western Europe, Italy, ca. 20th century CE. A stunning ornamental nautilus shell in a sterling silver dragon stand designed and handmade by Pestelli Creazioni. The pedestal is a scallop shell, the underside is stamped with maker and purity marks. A pair of clawed legs support the dragon head that wraps over the shell's spiral. Pestelli specializes in "jewelry and silverware in antique style," hiring exceptionally skilled goldsmiths and artisans. The company was founded in 1908 in Florence's historical center, with inspiration from the Renaissance and Medici collection. These works were made on the principle: quality over quantity - pieces might follow a similar design, but the use of natural stone or shell, such as this nautilus, ensures that each is unique. Pestelli's is currently managed by 4th generation Tommaso Pestelli, and artistic works are displayed at the Silver Museum in Florence and owned by special clients such as the Vatican and European royalty.
