Description
Native American, Western United States, Montana / Idaho region, Nez Perce, Crow, & Sioux (Lakota) people, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A pair of leather belts covered with thousands of embroidered seed beads, lane (lazy) stitched onto the wider belt and narrow with brass rivets. Glass seed beads were introduced to Indigenous people by Europeans, and lines of beads widely replaced quillwork and were incorporated into clothing using bright / contrasting colors were used to be seen from a distance. The brass tacks in the narrow band are often used by Western tribes such as the Crow and Nez Perce. The ridged surface of the wider belt is often seen in Northern Plains styles ñ the colors of the beads are semi-translucent and vibrant, indicating late 19th to early 20th century age. Size of wider belt: 37.75" L x 2" W (95.9 cm x 5.1 cm)

Condition
Loss to buckles on wider belt with tear to terminal ends of hide and loose beadworlk threads. Losses to beads near center of belt and discoloraiton and staining to hide. Narrow belt has some losses to beads and areas of green patina to brass tacks. Both are in good condition with great preservation to beadwork.
