Turban Helmet, Iranian, Etched, 17th Century
Helmet.
Age: 17th Century.
Materials: Silver over copper.
Construction: Hand hammered from one piece.
Description: Large bulbous shape in order for a fighter to wear his turban and still be protected. Helmet is etched throughout with flowers, foliates, geometrical shapes, dogs and rabbit- like animals. Armor mark inside helmet. Five holes around bottom to hold chain mail.
Size: 13"H x 9.5" Diameter
Weight: 3lbs.
Condition: Good. Some wear to silver. Five small cracks around base, no larger than 0.5".
History: Helmets of this type are usually called turban helmets because of their large bulbous shape. It is likely that turban helmets were regarded not merely as armor but also a kind of religious insignia, their very shape marking the wearer as a fighter in the Holy War . Turban helmets, together with mail-and-plate armor of matching decoration, were intended for the heavy cavalry and are recorded as early as the fourteenth century..
