In the manner of Robert Manwaring
The shaped and carved top rail above an elaborately pierced geometric lattice back with central carved panel, with shaped open arms and stuff over seat leading to conforming lattice corner brackets above square-section front legs and outswept back legs on block feet, 58.5cm wide x 56cm deep x 99cm high, (23in wide x 22in deep x 38 1/2in high) (2)
Footnotes:
The design for the backs of these chairs is based on plate 10 showing 'Chinese Chairs' in Manwaring's The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion', London, 1765, reproduced in E. White, Ed., Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, p. 78. He describes the designs as 'appear[ing] so very elegant and super, [but] are upon a simple construction, and may be very easily executed...'.
