Description
Two Antique Framed Needleworks
the first worked in multicolor silk on very fine loose weave ground, with pious verse: "Peace be within thy / Holy temple / O Lord of host" above a flower filled basket, and "Sweet Home," with images of a church, a home, crowns, the Bible, florals, birds and butterflies, within a red border, presented in a molded mahogany frame with gilt liner (framed dimensions 19 x 20.2 inches) (with some discoloration, staining, not examined out of frame); the second worked in multicolor silk on very fine ground, top register with alphanumeric rows above a chorus of angels and pious words, with a verse from Shakespeare's Tempest: "The cloud capt towers, the gorgeous palaces / the solemn temples, the great globe itself / yea all which it inherits shall desolve / and like the baseless fabric of a vision / leave not a wreck behind", bottom register with maker's name, "Mary Ann Bartlett / June 10 1834 aged 8 years", presented in a molded painted frame under glass (framed dimensions 14 x 16 5/8 in.) (scattered holes, loss to borders, fading, stitch loss, not examined out of frame) .
