Leroy Gordon "Gordo" Cooper, Jr. (1927-2004) was the youngest of the Mercury 7 astronauts. During the Mercury-Atlas 9 mission of May 1963, Cooper piloted the Faith 7 spacecraft for what would be the last American solo orbit in space. There were numerous technical issues towards the end of Faith 7's flight, with carbon dioxide levels rising in both the cabin and Cooper's suit, and the temperature of the vessel reaching 130 Ă¢Â°F. Cooper also ended up having to manually control and position the capsule for re-entry.
