Description
A small collection of four partly printed adhesive bookplates signed and inscribed by award-winning young adult novelist Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007). The bookplates are all unused and three of the four are in pristine condition; the fourth has a minor scuff mentioned just for accuracy. 4" x 3."
The bookplates are signed and inscribed as:
1) "Amanda - / Madeleine L'Engle";
2) "…& Summer, too / Madeleine L'Engle";
3) "Be a Namer - / Madeleine L'Engle";
4) "Be a Light Bearer / Madeleine L'Engle"
The two last inscriptions refer to themes in novels from L'Engle's Chronos and Kairos series: naming in "A Wind in the Door" (1973); and light-bearing in "A Ring of Endless Light" (1980). Naming and light-bearing are two concepts that L'Engle explores in her fictional adaptions of a Manichean universe, where naming is juxtaposed with un-naming, or destroying; and light-bearing is the antithesis of darkness. L'Engle was awarded the Newbery Medal for perhaps her most famous work, "A Wrinkle in Time" (1963).
