1855 Bill of Sale for Two 16-Year-Old Slave Girls
A pre-Civil War bill of sale for two young slave girls. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 6.25", n.p., dated October 12, 1855. Documentation of slavery ten years prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. The bill records the sale of "two negroes Girls to wit - Victoria of yellow complexion and about sixteen years of age at $1200 & Parthenia of dark complexion and sixteen years of age." Sold to A.J. Wood & Bro for $2,100 by William L. Boyd Jr. Also signed by two witnesses. The document has flattened folds, with separations repaired with tape on verso. Toning, staining, and soiling throughout. Minor chipping at the edges. Boldly signed.
