Description
Islamic art jug. Raqqa, 13th century.
Glazed ceramic with metallic lustre.
Size: 24 x 15 x 15 cm.
A globular-bellied jug with a lustre-finish that both absorbs and projects the light that falls on the piece. The jug is defined by an unglazed cylindrical foot and a simplified S-shaped handle, characteristics of Raqqa pottery. Finally, the jug is topped by a high neck, which ends in a wide round mouth. Despite the wear and tear caused by the passage of time, it still retains the blue glaze on the brown glaze, which has forms reminiscent of Islamic script.
Raqqa was one of the most popular pottery-making centres in Ayyubid Syria. Raqqa had numerous pottery production workshops, which excelled in moulding, glazing, and lustre-ware.
