Original hand-colored lithograph from the Imperial Folio edition of John J. Audubon‘s and John Bachman‘s The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, which was published between 1845 and 1848. Like the Birds of America, the Viviparous Quadrupeds was intended to be a comprehensive visual catalogue of North America animalia, with the focus shifting from birds to four legged land mammals. Totaling 150 prints, the project was rushed to completion as Audubon‘s health declined. Though credited in the plates to John James Audubon, as many as half of the animals depicted in the work were from paintings by his son John Woodhouse Audubon, and the backgrounds were mostly painting by his other son, Victor Gifford Audubon. The text to the work was by the Rev. John Bachman, the elder Audubon‘s good friend and in-law - Audubon‘s two sons were married to Bachman‘s two daughters. The prints were lithographed, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia.
