2 volumes. Together with 25 hand-colored plates, frontispieces, engraved title pages. (8vo) uniform half dark blue calf, raised bands, spines stamped in gilt, all edges marbled. First Editions.
Early account of the first permanent English settlement in Australia, spuriously attributed to notorious convict George Barrington. Each volume features an engraved frontispiece and hand-colored engraved title page; ”History” has an additional 15 hand-colored plates, ”Voyage” has 10 hand-colored plates (one of which a folding map). Notable for featuring the first hand-colored illustrations of New South Wales topography.
Condition
Spines sunned; bookplate, gift inscription at head of chapter one in both volumes; occasional toning and foxing, affecting plates, a few short tears, some repaired; very good.
