Description
By Alec Black. Plywood, sumi e ink, oil pastel. 4ft x 2ft. Alec Black's work speaks to questions of identity, commodity, and assimilation. The artist works primarily in matte medium, oil pastels, acrylic and fabric paints, applied to appropriated Japanese and Asian inspired fabric material. Black creates portraits, often of groups of his friends, paired in conversation with imagery evocative of Asian American stereotypes. These visual dialogues reappropriate a visual language of conventional American portraiture. Through this process, Black's compositions work to dismantle notions of orientalism in the United States. The works bright colors and striking imagery call to mind the visual language of commercials and popular media alluding to the commodification of Asian culture.
