Description

Iscayo CeremonialWoman's Mantle, Pacajes, Dept. of La Paz, 19th C. Alpaca warp and weft, natural dyes. Size: 48'' x 42'' (122 x 107 cm). The lscayo was worn by the chiefs wife, T'alla, for special festivals, especially during the Corpus (Christi) when the Pleiades first appear in the Southern Hemisphere skies, and Todos Santos when the community visits the graves of their revered ancestors. The iscayo is one of the most recognizable and coveted heirloom textiles. This particular textile demonstrates band of natural dyes of indigo and cochineal on a natural alpaca chocolate brown ground. Bands of warp pattern stripes, qutu, border the central diamond join. At the weft selvedge of each side there are three small rows of lloq'e, made of red opposite spun yarns. Lloq'e yarns are a shamanistic structure which protect the wearer from evil spirits and danger. Besides her political role alongside the chief, mallku, the T'alla also performed numerous shamanistic rites such as coca leaf reading and divination.
