Description
Royal Bonn
Ruysdael vases, set of two
Germany, c. 1900
glazed porcelain, glazed earthenware
9.5 h x 6 w x 5.25 d in (24 x 15 x 13 cm)
8.25 h x 7.25 w x 6.75 d in (21 x 18 x 17 cm)
Set includes a vase designed by Franz Anton Mehlem. Impressed artist's mark and number to underside of one example 'Franz Ant. Mehlem T 2532' with glazed manufacturer's mark and number 'Royal Bonn 3838/111 5 Germany Ruysdael'. Glazed manufacturer's mark and number to underside of additional example 'Royal Bonn 267 Germany 36 Ruysdael'.
Catalog Note: Established by Franz Anton Mehlem in 1836, Royal Bonn produced both porcelain and earthenware works that were popular among the aristocrats across Europe until 1920. The firm adopted Jugendstil motifs for their wares specifically for the 1900 Universelle Exposition in Paris. Ruysdael is most likely an honorific to the important Dutch family of painters (Jacob and Salomon). The vases are hand-painted but all of the designs seem to be repeated, interestingly on different sizes and shapes. Some designs are more commonly found while others are rarely seen. These works are done in matte finishes with glossy highlights. All are bold in design and color, and fit nicely with Art Nouveau or Arts & Crafts interiors.
This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
