Description
This is the classic very first so-called dollar listed by Hibler-Kappan. It commemorates the opening of the Erie canal in 1825. In the 1820s and 30s America's main transportation routes were a series of constructed canals rather than muddy dirt roads winding through the countryside. It greatly sped up transportation of goods and services throughout then Midwest to the East coast. In July 2020 Dave Bowers published an article on this medal in the Numismatist, pages 75-76. This piece is white metal. A copy of the article is included.Date: Country (if not USA): State: City: Provenance:
