Description
GORHAM & CO. COIN SILVER OPEN SALTS, PAIR, each having a round-form well with flared rim, sides featuring repousse, chased, and engraved floral garland decoration, scrolled frame surrounding engraved "PSJ" initials, raised on a round pedestal-type foot. Each impressed to base with the three Gorham pseudo hallmarks utilized c. 1855 to 1860 above "COIN". Total weight: 2.395 ozt. Gorham & Co., Providence, RI. Mid 19th century. Each 2 3/8" D rim, 1 5/8" HOA.
Provenance:
Jones family, Crewe, VA, purportedly buried during the Civil War to save, according to consignor.
Condition
Very good overall condition with some wear, surface scratches, and nicks, minor worn spots to raised and engraved decoration, possibly one or a few minor/small dents; one with rim slightly out of round.
