Description
Palmer Chrisman (Texas, 1913-1984), bluebonnet landscape, oil on canvas
sight: 16 x 20 in., frame: 27 x 31 in.
Provenance: from the collection of noted San Antonio artist, Brian St. John
Palmer Chrisman grew up in Austin, Texas in the years just following World War I. After his overseas military service in World War II, Chrisman returned to Texas and established himself as a successful doctor, when he began painting as a hobby. Soon he was trading medical services for art lessons with famed Texas landscape painter Porfirio Salinas, and it is easy to see the influence of Salinas on later artworks by Chrisman. Like his mentor, Chrisman portrayed the beauty of the Texas Hill Country including fields of bluebonnets and rolling hills, the changing leaves of fall, and the foliage reflected in the water of the Guadalupe River. The late President Lyndon B. Johnson once ordered thirty Chrisman paintings to be given as Christmas gifts from the White House, and today Palmer Chrisman artworks can be found in both private and public collections around the country.
