Description
Two small garments made of hand-embroidered fabric with gold thread and application of gold braids. This sort of vest was typically worn during the ritual of circumcision, often embroidered in gold both to indicate the high social rank of the wearer and for the cauterizing properties associated with this precious metal in traditional Islamic medicine. For a comparative example, see Museo delle Tappezzeria Vittorio Zironi, Bologna, Acc. no. 829.
