Description
Thailand/ Sawankhalok/ Sukhothai Province - 14th - 16th century. Comprising a covered bowl of compressed globular from, rising from a short ringed foot to a decorative finial, the exterior neatly incised with triangular patterns, covered overall in a crackled celadon glaze, the foot, underside, rims, and interior of the cover unglazed revealing the brown body. Together with two figurines, each molded as a man on horseback, both the horse and the rider depicted in a whimsical style, with exaggerated features and unrealistic proportions, one figure covered in white glaze, the other in a brownish green glaze with black detailing, both having an appealing glossy finish ending above the horse's hoofs and revealing the brown bodies.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities. The white glazed figurine with remains of black paint.
Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. Istvan Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
