He started his career as an illustrator of promotional articles. Later he became known all over the world as a painter, director of avant-garde films and manager of the rock band The Velvet Underground. He has been featured in several biographical and documentary films about him. In 1991, a museum dedicated to his work was opened in Medzilaborce near his parents' hometown. Another museum opened three years later in his native Pittsburgh.
