Description
An antique Hopi kachina doll. Ca. 1920s, Late Traditional era. Hand-carved and painted cottonwood figure. White robe with arrow motive, ceremonial headdress decorated with black eagle feathers. The doll presumably represents Angwusnasomtaqa, crow mother spirit. The Hopi people are a Native American ethnic group who primarily live in northeastern Arizona, US. Kachina or katsina figures are used to instruct young women about the immortal beings that act as messengers between humans and the spirit world.
