Small photo album dated Jan 1, 1891, commemorating the first head of state to visit the then-new Hotel del Coronado; King Kalakaua of Hawaii. The last King of Hawaii, King Kalakaua would pass away days later in San Francisco on Jan 20, 1891, on the same California trip chronicled in these photos, making them among the last photos of the monarch ever taken. In pencil on the cover: King Kalakaua at Coronado Beach. Faded but historically significant albumen photos of the king in his last days, and the great hotel in its early ones. Six photos, mounted to card, arranged into an album and tied with a ribbon, stamped inside: "Reminiscences of Coronado, Jan 1, 1891, Compliments of H. M. A. Miller.' (Miller was a prominent resident of San Francisco.) The King is clearly identifiable in two of the six photographs. Album approx. 8" x 6". Photos approx. 4 3/4" x 3 3/4".
