Item Details
Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA-RECONSTRUCTION]. Extremely Rare Reconstruction Broadside, The Radical Convention in Philadelphia, September 3d, 1866. [Philadelphia], [1866].

15 1/4 x 21 3/4 in. broadside (creased along old folds, with separation to some creases, some areas of loss to upper and lower left portions of broadside, and spots of staining and soiling throughout).

Central to the broadside is an illustration featuring caricatures of African American subjects walking together with white candidates in a procession, as a group of African American men watch and cheer from the sideline. Above and below, text reads in full: "The Radical Convention In Philadelphia, September 3d, 1866. Geary The Candidate for Governor was in the Procession, Every Radical Candidate for United States Senator took part. White Men & Women Are You Ready for This?"

Several similarly racist broadsides attacking the Radical Republican position on Black suffrage were issued during the course of the Pennsylvania gubernatorial election of 1866. Republican candidate General John White Geary (1819-1873) supported Black suffrage, while his opponent, Hiester Clymer (1827-1884), ran on a white supremacy platform. On 9 October, Geary defeated Clymer to become the 16th governor of Pennsylvania, serving in that capacity from 1867-1873.
